Demand for the wood burners is up 300 per cent over the last two years thanks to the exceptionally cold winters, the company said yesterday.

William McGrath, chief executive, added: “People are choosing to install a wood-burning stove to gain some independence from the fuel network and guarantee warmth in their homes.”

The group says wood burners are a cost effective way for energy conscious heating – without the worry of what’s happening to the utility suppliers.

The stoves, designed in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, are claimed to have efficiencies of over 80 per cent, which means that nearly all the heat generated stays in the room, and only a fraction goes up the chimney.

With an open fire, quite the reverse is true, with up to 75 per cent of the heat generated wasted.
